“You are looking so young”, a compliment every one of us wants from others. There are numerous cosmetic treatments to own your look and one of such treatments is Botox. The main aim of Botox is “To look more relaxed and less stressed.”

What actually is Botox?

Botox is given in the form of injections and are noted primarily for their ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. It’s considered a safe, effective treatment for wrinkles around the eyes( crow’s feet), frown lines (in the glabellar region), horizontal forehead creases, etc.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is the name of a toxin product produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are various other brands as well. It is a term you often hear because it was the first injection of botulinum toxin.

What areas can be treated?

Not only for wrinkles, they’re also used to treat conditions such as

  •  For esthetics, botox is used for reducing frown lines (at the glabellar region), wrinkles around eyes ( crow’s feet), wrinkles around the mouth, nasolabial folds & smoothening out of neck wrinkles.
  • Cervical dystonia, a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms
  • Severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • an overactive bladder
  • Blinking that you can’t be controlled (blepharospasm)
  • Eyes that point in different directions (strabismus)

Botox injections may also help prevent chronic migraines.

This medicine is given by injection by experienced health care professionals. It is injected into the affected muscles (intramuscularly) while treating eye disorders, muscle spasms/muscle stiffness, and wrinkles. When used to prevent migraines, they are injected into the muscles of the head and neck. It is applied to the skin (intradermally) to treat excessive sweating. In the treatment of saliva / excess saliva, the drug is injected into the salivary glands. When treating an overactive bladder, it is inserted into the bladder.

How does it work?

In simple words, if I have to explain, Botox blocks signal from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle will not be able to contract. That makes wrinkles relax and soften.

Getting Botox only takes a few minutes &  you will need topical anesthesia. Botox is injected into specific muscles with only slight discomfort. Your dose, the number of injections, place of injection, and frequency of treatment are determined by your condition and your response to treatment. In children, the dose is also based on weight. Most people begin to see results in a few days to 2 weeks, and the effect usually lasts 3 to 6 months.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Minor bruising or discomfort may occur but should improve within a few days. Other side effects may include:

  • swelling or drooping in the eyelid area if you are taking it near the eye region
  • tiredness
  • headache
  • neck pain
  • double vision
  • dry eyes
  • allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or asthma symptoms
  • an upset stomach

If someone wants to try Botox, it is a good idea to speak to your doctor about the risks, costs, and other considerations based on your conditions.
